Yari

The yari is the Japanese word for a spear. In Deadliest Warrior: The Game, it is one of the Mid-Range weapons of the Samurai.

Description[]

The yari is characterized by a straight, dagger-like blade, which could range from several centimeters to 3 feet in length. The shaft is made from hardwood covered in lacquered strips of bamboo, and sometimes inlaid with metal or semiprecious materials.

Uses[]

Like most spears, the yari was primarily used for thrusting, although the razor-sharp edges could cut as well. Polearms like the yari came into prominence in Japan in the late 13th Century after two attempted Mongol invasions. They quickly became the principle weapon of the Samurai and remained so until the peaceful Edo period (1603-1868), when a greater emphasis was placed on small-scale close quarters combat and improvements in swordmaking caused the yari to lose its practicality.
