SLINGSHOT-PS003

slingshot

The slingshot is a small, hand-held projectile weapon. It was the Close-Range weapon of the IRA.

Description

Slingshots usually consist of a forked Y-shaped frame from which rubber or elastic bands are attached, leading back to a pocket in which the projectile is placed. The slingshot used in Deadliest Warrior is noticeably more advanced, being mounted onto a plastic arm guard. It also can be used with a stabilizer to help increase the accuracy of this weapon. The stabilizer is constructed usually of a metal rod and a weight.

Uses

While the Sling existed since ancient times; a slingshot requires elasticity to launch the projectiles. Elastic materials like vulcanized rubber were invited in the late 1800s. Before this, the only weapon that would resemble a slingshot would be a crossbow; which could not be scaled down into a slingshot without losing the bow strength required to make its projectiles lethal.

Throughout much of the 20th Century, slingshots were popular children's toys because their low projectile velocities were generally considered to be safe. However, as demonstrated on the show, it is easy to build a slingshot capable of achieving high enough projectile velocities to cause bodily harm.

Due to the limited resources and technology required to construct them, slingshots have been used by guerilla forces such as the IRA. They were very common in protests and riots lead by the IRA, but there have been examples of the IRA bringing them into battle.
