The slingshot is a small, hand-held projectile weapon. It was the Close-Range weapon of the IRA.
Description
Slingshots usually consist of a forked Y-shaped frame from which rubber or elastic bands are attached, leading back to a pocket in which the projectile is placed. The slingshot used in Deadliest Warrior is noticeably more advanced, being mounted onto a plastic arm guard.
Uses
Throughout much of the 20th Century, slingshots were popular children's toys because their low projectile velocities were generally considered to be safe. However, as demonstrated on the show, it is easy to build a slingshot capable of achieving high enough projectile velocities to cause bodily harm.
Due to the limited resources and technology required to construct them, slingshots have been used by guerilla forces such as the IRA.
