Description[edit | edit source]
Plated mail is simply chain mail interlinked with small metal plates to reinforce the mail rings. There are several variants, distinguished by the size and shape of the plates. The type used by Ivan the Terrible and Vlad the Impaler had long horizontally-placed plates embedded in the chainmail.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Plated mail first appeared in the Middle East, and would later be used in Central and East Asia, India, and Eastern Europe. The plates reinforced the armor, making it less vulnerable to piercing and bludgeoning weapons.
