A shortened version of the Galil SAR (short assault rifle), the Galil MAR or Micro Galil was introduced in 1994. It was developed for use in the army and police special units, vehicle crews, army staff, special operations personnel, and airborne infantry. The Isreali Comando's use a shorter version of the Galil because it is more manuverable but has less stopping power.

The Micro Galil's design is a combination of the normal Galil's barrel with a M16 magazine and an AK model stock.

Some Galils are equipped with a soda bottle opener underneath the barrel.

This weapon was tested against the Navy SEAL's M4 Colt Commando in hitting a moving pig target surrounded by four bystanders. The M4 hit the pig target with all 30 rounds in 34s while the Micro Galil fired only 23 rounds in 48s, achieving 21 hits and two grazes. The edge was given to the M4 for its accuracy, faster rate of fire, and tighter grouping.
