The Kanabo is a semi mythical war club of ancient Japan. It was the Special Weapon of the Samurai.
Description
The kanabo is large wooden club with metal studs. It is around 4 feet in length and weighed 15 Ibs.
The Kanabo in the show, which which weighed 35 pounds, was used against the Viking's shield. While it managed to damage the shield, the Kanabo received just as much damage, with many of the studs falling out. The kanabo was measured at 470 psi, and it was theorized that an arm behind the shield would suffer at least one broken bone.the viking shield did not have arm straps .it had a single hand mount there for the user would not suffer from a broken bone.
Back for Blood Special
In the second season opener, it was determined that the Spartan and Samurai were the biggest contenders for the title of deadliest Ancient Warrior. Both of their weapons were tested again for the new match. Among them was the Kanabo, which was tested against the Spartan's shield. Unlike the Viking's shield, the Spartan's could not be broken, and only had minor dippeling.
Uses in History
Historically, the Kanabo was hardly ever used in actual battle, as it was too unwieldy compared to other weapons in Japan. Also, when it was used it weighed about 10 - 35 pounds but was used by Samurai on occasions. But in truth, the Kanabo was mostly found in myth, wielded by Oni demons. The Kanabo is strong enough to bend or break other weapons, like a Katana.
