Hapkido

Hapkido and taekwondo are two Korean martial arts. Together, they were the hand-to-hand combat of the North Korean Special Operations Force.

Hapkido[]

Hapkido contains both long and close-range fighting techniques, utlilizing jump kicks and percussive hand strikes at longer ranges, and pressure point strikes, joint locks, and throws at closer ranges. Hapkido emphasizes circular motion, non-resisting movements, and control of the opponent. Practitioners seek to gain advantage through footwork and body positioning to employ leverage, avoiding the use of strength against strength.

Taekwondo[]

Taekwondo is a striking art, which emphasizes kicks thrown from a mobile stance, taking advantage of the leg's greater reach and power compared to the arm. Training generally consists of a system of blocks, kicks, punches, and open-hand techniques and may also include various takedowns or sweeps.

Comparision[]

The fighting technique was compared to the US Army Ranger's SOCP. The combination of hapkido and taekwondo relies on using the attacker's energy against him and attacking his pressure points as well as using circular motions and quick strikes followed by a lethal finishing blow while SOCP relies on simple, quick blunt force to do damage and make space. Both styles of fighting were deemed to be equally effective but were factored into the simulation as X-factors, not weapons.
