The Chinese Stick Grenade is an anti-personnel fragmentation grenade. It was the Explosive Weapon of Pol Pot.

Description[]

The stick grenade consisted of an explosive head on top of a hollow wooden handle. A pull cord runs from the detonator inside the head, terminating in a porcelain ball that is held in place by a detachable screw cap on the base of the handle.

States[]

  • Charge: 6 oz
  • Weight: 1.3 lbs
  • Effective Range: 30-40 lbs
  • Improvised shrapnel sleeve

Uses[]

The Chinese stick grenade is based on the Model 24 Stielhandgranate grenade used by Germany in both World Wars, introduced in 1915 in response to the mass introduction of trench warfare. Before throwing, the cap was removed and the cord is pulled, starting the five-second fuze that detonates the six ounces of TNT filling. When thrown, the handle prevented the grenade from bouncing or rolling on the ground like most hand grenades would.

The Khmer Rouge would often add to the stick grenade's lethality by filling a sleeve on the tip of it with small metal shrapnel.

The 'Grenade Bundle' is simply a stick grenade with a larger explosive charge or with multiple smaller grenades attached to the top. This was used for clearing trenches.

Test[]

The stick grenade was pitted against the RGD-5 of Saddam Hussein. The two weapons were tested against 4 guard targets around a guard shack. Both weapons killed 3/4 guards, but the edge was given to the Chinese stick grenade due to it's greater explosive payload and lower risk of rolling off target.
