Ballistic Knife

The Ballistic Knife is a knife with a detachable blade that can be expelled from the handle by means of a spring-operated mechanism. It was the Special Weapon of the Spetsnaz.

Description[]

The blade fits into the hollow handle, locking it in place. The handle contains an interior spring that propels the blade when the red button is pressed.

Stats[]

  • Special Weapon
  • 10 inches
  • Under 1 lbs
  • Spring loaded

Uses[]

The knives are designed to be covert projectile weapons for situations when a firearm is not appropriate. To fire the weapon, a user pulls out a pin and presses the button, releasing the blade. The spring is capable of projecting the blade up to 18 feet away (6 meters) at a speed of 39 mph (63 km/h).

Ballistic knives, manufactured by the USSR company Ostblock, were supplied in large numbers to the Soviet Spetsnaz. Unlicensed copies of these weapons began appearing in the United States in the early 1980's, but they were banned nationwide in 1986.

The knife can still be used as a knife, without needing to fire it. The blade is still as sharp and deadly as a normal knife.

In reality, ballistic knives were never produced for nor used within spetsnaz units. The closest weapon to them is the NRS-2 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NRS-2) knife with a built-in firearm in the handle. Information about the Soviet company "ostblok" in Russian sources do not exist[1].

In show[]

In Green Beret vs Spetsnaz[]

The ballistic knife went up against the E-Tool. The ballistic knife was tested on three glass orbs and penetrated all three, at a velocity of 58 feet per second, or 39 mph. In a very close comparison, the ballistic knife was chosen due to its ranged capability and portability.

In Back for Blood Special (Spetsnaz vs IRA)[]

The season one footage reviewed the I.R.A.'s Slingshot and Spetsnaz's Ballistic Knife. The ballistic knife was determined as having the advantage due to the weapon's killing power.
